When Penny Auctions site Beezid.com put up a new Macbook Pro laptop for auction, I had to get in on the action to see for myself this much sought-after piece of hardware. In fact, the allure of this laptop is not simply the high-quality hardware, but the software that powers it as well. Apple has been using a proprietary Operating System to power their hardware since day 1, and this has been a huge part of what has made Apple so successful, causing them to edge close and closer to Microsoft, the software giant that we have all come to know, and many have come to either revere or hate.
Whoever it is that is winning that race, and whatever your preferences are for your choice of hardware and/or operating system, the battle between Microsoft and Apple serves one group of people above all others: you, the consumer. As long as these two giants of industry are going at it head-to-head, the end result is going to be that they are each going to be constantly and consistently attempting to make better systems with more features at a price that is more affordable.
When four restaurants open up in the same neighbourhood, it isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it gives people the sense that this is the district that one should come to when you want to go out to eat. So, now it is up to those restaurants to appeal to the people that make it to the neighbourhood to get them to eat at their establishment.
Similarly, now that Apple and Microsoft have established the PC as one of the top 5 luxury item purchases, they can appeal to the sensibilities of their customers, each trying to get a larger share of the market by appealing to a wider audience.
And when they have to appeal to people’s pocket books, they lower the price. Imagine how much Windows7 would have cost if Apple’s Snow Leopard flavour of the Mac OS X didn’t sell for only $29. In a competitive marketplace, the consumer is always the winner. I guess we can be thankful that, no matter which type of computer you prefer, there will be one for you, and it will keep getting better and less expensive as long as the competition continues to heat up.
